About CherylDesigner/Goldsmith
Cheryl Powell grew up on the central Oregon Coast; exploring tidepools with her mother and five siblings. Cheryl graduated from Oregon State University in 1982, with a B.S. in Textile Science. In 1983 Cheryl was accepted at the prestigious Thundering Seas School for Goldsmithing. Director, Delphine Lass Krielsheimer of New York, passed on tool-making, hand-fabrication techniques for one-of-a-kind jewelry and a delight in sharing her old-world skills.
Cheryl & Company Goldsmiths began as a wholesale custom jewelry manufacturer of Cheryl’s original nautical designs; her gold and silver whaletails and dolphins sold for over 20 years in galleries from Alaska to California. In 1988, Cheryl spent nearly a year as a crewman aboard the wooden sailboat, “Viking”, observing marine life and visiting jewelry accounts, while sailing from Newport, Oregon to LaPaz, Mexico. Jewelry business brought her to Maui where she relocated in 1990 to became a scuba-diver. She competed in the Waikiki Roughwater and Maui open-ocean swimmimg events. She met her husband and windsurfing coach, Al West, who encouraged her to compete in the Maui County Slalom Championships, the Hawaii State and Nationals on Maui in 1993. Al taught thousands of students to windsurf and snowski, including their now 12-year old daughter, Allyson. Al owns and operates Mauivans.com, a customer-oriented car rental company.
Cheryl and Al moved to Carmel so that their daughter, a promising artist, could attend Stevenson School. Each summer the family works as a team teaching other families to wakeboard on Lake Shasta, (lakeshastavacation.com). Cheryl also enjoys bicycling, hiking, freestyle rollerblading, snowskiing, snowboarding, yoga and oil painting. She is still a student pilot, tennis beginner, has a motorcycle license that she never uses and looks forward to skydiving and kiteboarding. Cheryl knows that a variety of activities prevents injury, provides a fresh mental challenge and counteracts the effects of sitting as the joy of creating makes the hours at the jewelry bench fly by.
Nature has always been Cheryl’s favorite designer, she appreciates that each of us has a unique a sense of design and enjoys the creative process of working closely with customers to bring ideas to life. She considers it a joy and priviledge to work with nature’s most beautiful raw materials. “I especially love making custom wedding bands because the rings last a lifetime; they symbolize committment and timelessness, and a good marriage can bring out the best in us”. ![]() "My customers are those who have an idea of what they want, but they can’t find it at the mall. They need someone they can trust to do beautiful work at a fair price, and they want to know that their personal jewelry is made by someone who loves their work."
